SPEEDING CHARGE
Motorist Was Insistent
(New Zealand Prase Association) INVERCARGILL, Dec. 10.
A Transport Department officer, Gordon Caldwell, was sitting in his patrol car in the restricted speed area in Bay road, Invercargill, last month, when he saw a car approaching. He estimated that it was travelling at between 45 and 50 mile, an hour, so he stopped it. He asked the driver if he knew what speed he was doing. “Yes, 60,” was the reply. “Are you certain? X estimated you were doing about 50.” said the traffic officer.
“I was doing 60. 1 glanced at the speedo a moment before you stopped me,” the driver said. These facts were related to Mr G. A. Nicholls, S.M., in the Invercargill Court today. There was not a straight face in the Court when the Magistrate fined the driver, Eric Dahlenburg £5 for speeding.
