NEW ANTARCTIC STATION NAMED AFTER ADMIRAL’S HOME TOWN.—A photograph taken during Rear-Admiral George Dufek’s last visit to the Antarctic. He is shown holding the flag of Rockford, Illinois (the city where he was born), at a flag-raising ceremony on the site of the Rockford weather station and emergency airstrip which will be used when Little America Station is closed down at the end of this season. The new base is between Little America and Byrd Stations. It will serve aircraft flying between McMurdo Sound and Byrd Station.
