STREET RIOTS IN CARACAS
Opposition To New President
CARACAS (Venezuela), Dec. 10. Troops burled tear-gas shells last night to quell new demonstrations in Caracas by thousands of opponents of the Presi-dent-elect, Mr Romulo Betancourt. The demonstrations were begun on Monday .night by supporters of Rear-Admiral Wolfgang Larrazabal, whom Mr Betancourt beat in Sunday's Venezuela elections. , _ . ■, Mobs of screaming youths again poured into the streets last night after scattered incidents during the day, and troopers in gas masks and armed with sub-machine guns quickly rushed In to meet them. The police said they arrested 32 people during the demonstrations. Leaders of all political parties fear that a continuation of the rioting may encourage the Army to set up a new dictatorship. Earlier yesterday the ruling junta said it would stand with the voters* choice in Sunday's elections and threatened to suspend Constitutional rights, if necessary.
