HOSTEL FOR BLIND
Tender Accepted
For Building
A tender by D. G. Malcolm and Company, Ltd., has been accepted by the New Zealand Foundation for the Blind for building the South Island hoste' for the blind in Christchurch. Announcing this yesterday, Mr G. Ashdowne, Christchurch branch manager of the foundation, said the building was expected tn be completed by January, 1960. No contract -price was announced-. but the’ project was originally estimated to cost £135,000, of which £99,750 would be Government subsidy. Mr Ashdowne expressed the thanks of his organisation to Mr W. Williamson, -who had given the plans and specification* of the building free of charge. The site for the .building has Abberley Park on the east and entrances from Bristol, St; Albans and Ranfurly streets. The building will accommodate 48 blind persons, each of whom will have a bed-sitting room equipped with a “talking book machine,” radio and other special amenities A matron qualified in nursing will head the staff.
