RACING Hororata Candidates Gallop At Riccarton

Imitation, Bagman and Purser, rival candidates for the Hororata Cup on Saturday, showed fitness for that .test when semi-final gallops for the meeting were held at Riccarton yesterday. Among the H. A. Knight Memorial Handicap acceptors Worked Keep Time and Avenge were the most impressive.

Other sound trials were recorded by Heath and Ration Time which are engaged in hack events at the meeting. All the galloping took place on the new trial grass, which had been eased by rain but provided good footing. Among the earliest trialists was the Auckland Cup candidate Motueka, which was accompanied for the first mile of nine furlongs, the reverse way round the track, by Imitation. Motueka (R. W, Gould) and Imitation (E. G. Low) kept together for the first mile in Imin 47sec. Motueka carried on to complete the nine furlongs in 2min 0 3-ssec. Their sectional times were 39 2-ssec for the first three furlongs, 52 l-ssec for the first half-mile and Imin 32sec for seven furlongs. Packwood (E. G. Low) and Relinquish (W. A. Gibbs) were together throughout seven furlongs in Imin 34 2-ssec, the first three furlongs in 43sec, and the opening half-mile in 55 2-ssec. The stablemates, Robin Hood (W. Hani in) and Copenhagen (W. Beck) ran their first three furlongs in 40 4-ssec, and completed seven in Imin 32 4-ssec. Cheroot (W. A. Gibbs) and Kalinita (E. B. Skelton) ran home from the half-mile in 50 2-ssec. Easy Six Furlongs Tintagel (R. W. Gould) and Sea Fox (J. Leach) ran the last four of an easy six furlongs in 52 4-ssec. Voltewa (G. D. Lee) finished two lengths in front of Mighty Son (E. B. Skelton) at the end of six furlongs in Imin 22 l-ssec. The last half-mile took 54 3-ssec. Allemande (W. Beck) and Mhor (E. G. Low) sprinted home from the half-mile in 51 l-ssec. Gambol (R. W. Gould) -shaded Trapped (P. Graham) at the finish of six furlongs in Imin 19secs. The first two furlongs took 25 4-ssec and the first three 39 l-ssec. Purser (B. W. McDonald) drew out to lead his stablemate Brianbra (G. W. Mein) by a length after completing seven furlongs in Imin 31 4-ssec, the final halfmile in 50 3-ssec. Sarcelle (W. Beck) was not expected to do her best in a run from the five furlongs in Imin 5 l-ssec. The last halfmile took 52 l-ssec. Rayspar (G. W. Mein) and Fair Catch (P. Graham) ran their first two furlongs in 27sec, the opening half-mile in 51 4-ssec, and finished on terms after completing seven furlongs in Imin 32 I-ssec. Summer’s End (Miss. F. Taggart) completed six furlongs in Imin 19sec, the last half-mile in 51 2-ssec. Juliette (A. H. Eastwood) and General Time (J. Beck) were together throughout five furlongs in Imin 3 4-ssec» the early three in 39sec. Skylight (P. Graham) ran his first furlong in 13 2-ssec, the first two in 25 3-ssec and completed five in Imin 6 4-ssec. He was under a good hold throughout. Gladwyn (B. W. McDonald) led Rathfarham (L. McGuire) by two lengths at the end of their halfmile in 52sec. Keep Time showed his usual keenness in the earlier stages of his six furlong gallop in Imin 16 4-ssec. Coulter) was under a good hold alongside Duster (R. J. Blair) at the end of their half-mile in 50 4-ssec. Rustic (L. J. Ellis) and Olympic Flame (D. J. Thistoll) were partnered over six furlongs in Imin 20sec. Their sectional times over the first three furlongs were 15 3-ssec, 27 4-ssec and 40 4-ssec respectively. McCool (C. McDonald) was given an easy run home from the half-mile in 54sec. His stablemate, Shoal, with the same rider up, followed in 53sec. Ardabil (D. J. Thistoll) drew out to lead his stablemate. Snack (G. ' Blue Count was the most impressive trialist at Wingatui this morning when the gallops were held under ideal conditions. The Count Rendered gelding is a candidate for the Tapanui Handicap, the feature race at the Tapanui Racing Club's meeting on Saturday. Blue Count (R. J. Skelton) and Promise (K. J. Schubert) were not hurried over the early stages of their six-furlong trial on the plough, but came home well over the last three furlongs in 39 2- completing the distance in Imin 21 2-ssec. Blue Count, which has not raced since the Wyndham meeting early in October, will be ridden by L. W. Hare. Paper Clip, ridden by his trainer, H. A. Anderton, finished on terms with Prince Ermine (B. P. Kennedy) over the same ground in Imin 25 2-ssec. Both horses were travelling well within themselves and had no trouble in coming home the last three furlongs in 42 2-ssec. King Gus King Gus IK. J. Schubert), which will make a fresh start in the Heriot Stakes, ran the opening three furlongs in the smart time of 38 l-ssec, but he was easing up over the closing stages to run out the full distance in Imin 23sec. Black Star (R. J. Skelton) was given a quiet half-mile in Sflsec, the first furlong in Usee. Mitre Peak (H. T. Anderton) completed his work by dashing home the last three furlongs in 42 4-ssec. Wallace, said yesterday that Count Filou would now be turned out of training, probably for six or eight weeks. The Takanini rider L. G. Coles, who was engaged for Colchis in the Auckland Cup, has been informed by the horse’s trainer, T. R. Howe, of Awapuni, that he will not contest the big Ellerslie event.
