TROTTING Waimate Entrants Impress At Trials

Thirty-eight two-year-olds, including nine engaged in the New Zealand Golden Slipper Stakes at Waimate on Saturday, started in four heats run over one mile at trials held at New Brighton yesterday by the Canterbury Trotting Owners’ and Breeders’Association. i ; -

Arania and Samantha -were by far the most impressive of the youngsters engaged at Waimate, but Guile, Lauder Scott and Lattlejon raced well enough to enter calculations for that race. Arania and Bob Hanover began best in the first heat, with Bob Hanover forcing the pace. Sally Boy was soon handily placed, with a U. Scott—Solar gelding improving quickly. Once into the straight Arania had her opponents well covered and , she won Under a good hold by a dibit length from Sally Boy (Garrison Hanover—Sally Walla), with' a head to another Garrison Hanover youngster. Bob Hanover. The U. Scott—Solar gelding was six lengths back fourth, ahead of Whipdale, which showed speed after breaking, Chantilly and Light Potts. Arania, a member of G. B. Noble’s team, is bred to be good, being by U. Scott from Local Gold, the dam of Local Light. Arania has improved at every appearance at trial* and she looks a great prospect for the Waimate race. She has drawn No. 2 at the barrier and her ability to begin smartly could be a deciding factor. She took 2min 18 3-ssec tor the mile, and the last half in tmin 5 3-ssec. Samantha began best in the second heat, but at the end of two and a half furlongs a U. Scott—Tradition filly raced clear. The U. Scott filly led to the straight, but was no match for Samantha in the run home. Saniantha took 2min 16 l-ssec for the mile, the last half in Imin 5 l-ssec. She will form a formidable bracket with Arania at Waimate. She has drawn No. .13 and that may be against her. She is by U. Scott from Aileen Hall. Speedy Filly The U. Scott—Tradition filly showed considerable speed and was only a head behind the winner. Travis Girl, a candidate for Waimate, -was always handy and was four lengths back third, two lengths in front of an Intruder —Titania filly, which just shaded the Auckland youngster, Littlejon. The lastnamed was a little slow In the early rush ’for positions. He gradually improved and was not knocked about. His effort was an improvement on his run at Methven last month.

hind Guile, with a gap to Dark Wonder and Pohutukawa. Bon Deed, a half-brother by Logan Derby to Bon Ton, was never in a challenging position. Stormcrest, by Red Flight from Marjpy, led from end to end in the fourth heat, taking 2min 20 3-ssec for the mile. He ran on strongly to beat Lauder Scott by a length- and a half. Lauder Scott was second or third most of the way, but he was not driven out in the straight. He looks to have had plenty of work and will form a strong bracket With Guile on Saturday. A Sir Michael—Connector gelding . paced a fair race for third, ahead of a Light Brigade—Wendy Grattan colt, which broke near the three furlongs. Golden Palm and a U. Scott—Princess Peterson filly were next. Commonwealth tipped his driver at the start, but he put in a tremendous run for seventh. He should develop high-class form later on. Win For Battle Fling Battle Fling showed improvement on his latest efforts when he gained a narrow win in the 3min 23sec class pace. Great Dillon made most of the easy pace, but he dropped out early in the run home. Battle Fling was joined by Red Monarch, but he was untroubled to beat that horse by a head. Red Monarch, too, went a better race. The winner took 3mm 27 4-ssec for the mile and a half, the last half-mile in Imin 7sec. Great Dillon, now a member of F. E. Newfield’s team, tired to third, ahead of Super Brigade, which tangled inside the last 100 yards. Zany was right up fifth, ahead of Captain Free and Lady Attack, both of which lost ground early. Space King, a candidate for Waimate, finished well over the last furlong and just failed to catch Kerry Queen in the first heat of the 3min 37sec pace. Space King looks a likely improver. He took 3min 26 4-ssec for the mile and a half, the last halfmile in Imin 7 2-ssec. Ginger Top was right up third, just ahead of Fernleaf, with Falsehood, Couthie, Black Abbess and Night Watch all close up. Medoro Star, which has not raced this season, gained a narrow win over Double Dale in the second heat after taking 3min 21 4-ssec for the mile and a half, the last half-mile in Imin 5 4-ssec. Highland Don looked to have something in reserve in third place, ahead of Anne Peterson, which forced much of the pace. Scenic Cruise, Killarney Scott and Admit Prince led from end to end In the 3min 29sec class pace. This speedy but unreliable three-year-old did not look like putting a tqot wrong and he recorded 3min 24sec for the mile and a half, the last half-mile in the good time of Imin 3sec. Waitaki Child came home well for second and he will have prospects in the Waimate Cup. Sydney Hanover, First Belle, Rimu Lass and Au Fait were next. Snap On, Hey There, Readiness and Profitable finished together in that order in the 3mm 37sec class trot with Hey There being most impressive. Tee Jay, Resister and Crisette headed the others. The winners took 3min 30sec for the mile and a half, the pace being even throughout 12 HORSES QUALIFY Maiden Pacers’ Tests The four placed horses in the three heats qualified to start at totalisator meetings by recording 3min 30sec or better for the mile and a half at New Brighton yesterday. Fastest time of 3min 23 3-ssec was recorded by Kola, winner of the first heat. A half-brother by Medoro to Kuhla, he is trained at New Brighton by G. Cameron. He led from end to end. The Yaldhurst trainer, N.' L. Berkett, produced Count Camille and Johnny Capri to win the other heats. Count Camille is a three-year-old gelding by Light Brigade from Camille, and Johnny Capri is a three-year-old gelding by Johnny Globe from Colleen de Oro. Both won with something in hand. FIRST HEAT: KOLA scr G. Cameron 1: Avondale Heir scr R. Young 2; Placid Knight scr E. T. Hubbard 3; Lynn Royal scr J. R. Burrows 4. Length: length.: eight. Stewart, took Battle Cry north with him earlier in the week. The Light Brigade gelding will race from Stewart’s stables at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting later in the month. Battle Cry failed to strike his best form at the cup meeting last month. He has trotted his best races on the Auckland track and he will be an interesting candidate for the main races for trotters at the meeting.

Mystic Star, by Brahman from Petro Star, showed plenty of speed to win the third heat. She tost ground at the start, but improved quickly to take the lead from Pohutukawa (Johnny Globe —Maid Myra) with four furlongs and a half left. She was not extended from that point to beat Guile by three lengths, after taking 2min IBsec for the mile, the last half in Imin 6 2-ssec. Mystic Star is not engaged at Waimate. Gujtopaced a useful trial for Wainrnte. He took time to become properly balanced, but was handy over the last six and a half furlongs. He ran on well in the straight and is certain to improve,* He should go close to repeating the success of hi* halfbrother, Adroit, in the Waimate race.

Dark Glory (Hal Tryax—Rosehaven) was never far away and he held third place a length be-
