MEAT SALES TO U.S.

“Two Essential Requirements”

To enable New Zealand and Australia to market then meat to the best advantage in North America, there were two essential requirements with which each of the exporting countries must comply, said Mr J D Ormond, chairman of the Meat Board tonight. on his return 1 om Australia. where he had discussions with the Australian Meat Board. The first requirement was that meat must be prepared with scrupulous adherence to the requirements of the American trade in regard to quality packing and hygiene

Second, at all times it must be recognised that primarily the American market was the prerogative- of the American producer and that shipments, both as to quantity and time f arrival, should, if the need arose, be so regularised as nut to disturb the market as considered from the American industry’s point of view. Mr Ormond said the Australian board also agreed that it was desirable that the two boards should consult at regular interval.' for the better development of the meat trade of both countries. It was agreed that there should be an exchange of information from time to time on matters which are of mutual interest.

Mr J. de Gruchy. general manager of the board, and Mr L. A. P Sheriff, a board member, who accompanied Mr Ormond to Australia. left for Brisbane after the discussions with the Australian board to look at packaging houses. They will return home at the week-end.
