Supported A dozen letter cards addressed [to the Prime Minister (Mr Nash) ! were signed last evening by mem- [ bers of the Canterbury branch lot the New Zealand China So|c;c!y. commending his statement ion Quernoy. ! "I support the statement you made recently in Parliament that the Chinese islands of Matsu and Quemoy should be restored to the mainland." read the letter, and continued. *‘l beg you to keep this as New Zealand’s policy and to go further and recognise the Poking Government, as did the British Labour Government, and as has been supported at recent New Zealand Labour Party conferences ’’ ' Opening the meeting and welcoming the guest speaker (Mr T. Gebbie), Dr. R. Duff said that the ; society aimed at friendly and sympathetic knowledge on the part of New Zealand for China, and avoided as much as possible open
politics. “But.” he said, “we are clearly beamed at the great nation which has given so much to the world's culture, and which since 1949 has been organised under a strong central government.” Mr Geobic. who is the national secretary of the New Zealand Railway Tradesmen’s Association, showed a film and slides, and spoke of progress in China.
