Yachting SANDERS CUP TRIALS
Discussion On Entries
Unless two X-class yachts take the water at the Canterbury Sanders Cup representative trials this season, the trials will not be held. This was decided on a motion of Mr F. Simpson at a meeting of delegates of the Canterbury Yachting Association. •‘I would like to put this motion and leave it and see what happens. If there are two boats there we have trials; if not, no trials,” he said. If there was one trialist, the trials committee could recommend to the next meeting of the association whether he was to represent Canterbury or not, said Mr Simpson. The discussion arose when members asked what would happen at the trials if a representative from Akaroa arrived to compete. Mr D. Smith: I think we should know what we are doing. If he sails the course, who is to say he is not as good as anyone else? The secretary (Mr J. Nicholson): The normal procedure is for no race if there is not more than one starter.
“Supposing one boat turns up and has a crew which shows promise—not necessarily in X class races —if it is the only boat the trials committee should be able to recommend to the association one way or another,’’ said Mr C. F. Dann. Mr Simpson’s motion was carried. “What is the story with the challenge? Could we not make a provisional entry just to make sure if anything does happen,’’ suggested Mr G. S. Mander. His motion that a provisional entry in the inter-provincial contest be made, was carried. Frostply Plans Alterations to the Frostply class plans and specifications submitted by the Waimakariri club were approved and will become effective on Monday, November 24 — the day after the Canterbury Frostply championships. The main alterations to the former specifications are that the girder thickness has been increased from jin to jin, the centreboard has been reduced to 16in, the centreplate has been increased in thickness from Jin to jin, the rudder shape is optional and mast shape and materials for the mast are now optional. Synthetic sails are prohibited. Buoyancy must be five cubic feet and the minimum weight of the craft must be 1401 b. Mr Mander: What are the provisions for boats outside the restrictions? Boats would be allowed to compete if they were built up to the present, said Mr B. O'Sullivan. Any boats built after the restrictions come into force would have to measure to the specifications or they would not be permitted to compete.
