ADDINGTON MARKET

Store Cattle

I Considering that there was a big en !, _?* store cattle—7ss, compared with 714 last week—and that feed prospects are far from bright, the sale for store cattle was a surprisingly good one, though values did show some recession. Only a small bench of buyers followed the sale, but among them were a few from the West Coast.

The best of the two and three-year-old black cattle were back by about 60s a head, with mixed bred cattle being easier by a slightly bigger margin. Black yearling cattle sold fairly close to late rates, but again in the case of the mixed ored stock there was a decline of the order of about 40s to 50s. The best of the three-year-old steers realised from £3l 18s 6d to £35 18s 6d, with the higher figure going to G. C. Hiatt (Tormore) for the tops of a line of 26 Aberdeen Angus. Two-year-old steers made up to the same figure, this time the pnee going to W. N. Maxwell lEthelton) for the tops of 22 Aberdeen Angus and Aberdeen AngusHereford cross steers. The pick of these made from £29 18s 6d to £35 18s 6d. with good at £25 13s 6d to £2B 3s 6d, and others back to £l5 Ils.

Boner cows sold fully up to late reduced schedule rates. Best boner cows brought from £23 8s 6d to £26 8s 6d. medium £l9 18s 6d to £22 18s 6d, and poorer types from £lO 18s 6d to £l6 18s 6d.

BULL SALE I For a massive Shorthorn bull. Mr Henry Winter paid £129 17s 6d. This was easily the highest price paid at I Addington for a bull since bull prices started to appreciate early in i the year, and is one of the highest prices paid in New' Zealand to date, t Bidding for the bull, which was sent forward by A. C. Wright (Dunsandel). started off at £9O and soon rose to the £l3O level. There was an entry of more than 30 for the sale, and for the heaviest prices ranged from £BO upwards, with medium-weight bulls at £5O to £62. and lighter at £2O to £4O. DAIRY CATTLE For the dairy cattle sale there was j a yarding of 22 head of average to rood quality cows and heifers. The sale was regarded as a satisfactory i ’ one. with values being about on a • par with last week for both cows ■ ! and heifers. | Best cows made from £36 to £47. ; with others down to about £24. One J, extra good Friesian heifer realised <£so. good heifers fetched from £32 ♦o £4O. and others ranged down to £l6. VEALERS ! The entry of veal was the largest • ■ for several months, but quality was . i generally fairly good. The offering i • comprised mainly bigger type run- ' ners and vealers. and for this class, [ in sympathy with the lower beef > rates, prices were back by 60s to ’ £5. There were not so many smaller i calves in the selection, and for these i the decline was only about 20s to ' 30s. Vendors, however, showed them- ! selves willing to meet the market, i and the whole entry was sold to the ' trade. Extra prime large runners made from £23 13s 6d to £2B 3s , 6d. good large runners £l9 3s 6d jto £22 18s 6d. others £l4 13s 6d to I £lB 13s 6d; best quality suckers £l4 ! 13s 6d to £l7 18s 6d; medium quality suckers. £l2 3s 6d to £l4 3s 6d: I large calves. £ll 18s 6d to £l4 18s | 6d: medium calves, £8 13s 6d to £ll 3s 6d: small calves, £4 13s 6d to £8 3s 6d; and inferior and bobby calves I down to 50s. ’ FAT PIGS The porker entry was of similar i size to the double market before the show. Once again only best quality i pigs commanded any competition. I and fat, over-fat and unfinished sorts | were very hard to dispose of. The chopper entrv was larger than at the last sale, but with another buyer in attendance it was a good sale and ’ could be quoted up by 20s to 40s a • head. The bacon section was the largest of the season, there being | three trucks from outside districts. I Here again only the best quality pigs were saleable at satisfactory rates. Over-fat and rougher type pigs were verv hard to sell. Values were:— Plain and light porkers. £4 14s 6d to £5 12s 6d. Medium porkers, £6 2s 6d to £7 I 0s 6d. Heavy porkers. £7 4s 6d to £7 17s • 6d. Li gilt baconers, £8 Os 6d to £8 10s 6d Medium baconers. £8 12s 6d to £8 i 18s 6d. Heavy baconers. £9 0s 6d to £9 8s I 6d. Over-fat baconers £7 0s 6d to £7 ;18s 6d. Choppers. £8 8s 6d to £l6 8s 6d. STORE PIGS I The store pig entry was the largi est seen at Addington for a long i time and consisted of many small j and rough weaners. The attendance , of buyers was very small, and sales were very hard to make. Good I weaners opened up 10s a head down I on the last sale, and after the first race the sale really collapsed, and I pigs were down from 20s to 30s. There was a sprinkling of large and medium stores, which met with lower prices owing to the drop In pork and bacon prices. An advertised purebred Tam worth sow real- •' ised 21 guineas, and sou’s with litters I made from £6 to £lO, and in-pig I sows down to £6. Values were:— Small and rough weaners. 6s 6d to 16s 6d. I Best weaners. 22s to 365. Slips. 43s to 525. Small and medium stores, 58s to . 665. | Large stores, 70s to 80s.
