WOMAN KILLED BY TRUCK
Driver Convicted Of Negligence (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 18. A driver whose truck, moving at walking pace, knocked down a woman while he glanced aside, was convicted in the Magistrate’s Court at Wellington today of negligence so as to cause death. Defendant was Cyril Gordon Edward Reynolds, aged 19, who pleaded not guilty. The woman who lost her life was Mrs Margery Carnegie, aged 62. The police prosecutor (Mr F. O. Scott) said Reynolds had moved his truck round a corner, overtaking a bus parked almost at the corner. While turning the corner he looked to the rear to see if the tray would clear the bus. When he looked forward again he saw the woman falling and stopped the truck within a foot of the point of impact. Mrs Carnegie died early the next morning of a head injury. Mr J. S. Hanna, S.M., said Reynold’s clear duty had been to look to the front. It was such momentary lapses by drivers that caused fatal accidents. He fined Reynolds £4O and prohibited him from driving for a year. Witnesses’ expenses were £lO and Court costs 30s.
