RUBBISH IN DRAINS
Prosecutions May Be Made ji The Christchurch Drainage ißoard’s works committee is concerned at the amount of rubbish ;which is being deposited in rivers > and drains, mainly by owners along their courses. ' “Much damage is also being ’ done to the banks of the rivers; j and to the trees by vandals ali though, strictly speaking, this is l ]a matter for the Christchurch City ; Council.” a report last evening said. The committee* recommended that the Christchurch City Coun-' ’ cil be approached with a sugges-; ition that a scheme be instituted!
whereby honorary rangers be appointed to watch the authorities’ (interests in these matters. t The chief operations engineer '(Mr H. F. Page) reported that (during the contractors’ operations on the northern relief sewer, where it crosses the culvert in Wairarapa terrace, screens were put in across the drain to prevent rubbish clogging the pumps temporarily installed in the creek. During the week-end almost a truck load of grass, grass cuttings, bottles and [sundry rubbish was caught by i these screens. i “This is a clear indication of •what is going on regularly in some streams and it is intended to ar- | range for an inspection to check some of these streams and drains .at week-ends in the hope that I some offenders may be caught jand the practice checked.” said Mr Page. He recommended that advertisements be published warning once again that the dumping of rubbish in the drains, creeks and rivers under the board’s control is contrary to the by-laws and may lead to prosecution.
