Sportsman’s Notebook TWO NEW SELECTORS FOR N.Z. CRICKET-PANEL

Two new selectors are included! in the panel of three who will choose New Zealand's cricket teams in the coming summer. They are J. R. Reid, the present New Zealand captain, and Mr J.' Newman, of Central Districts.; The third member is Mr H. G j Vivian, of Auckland, who has'i been on the selection committee i

for the last two years. Mr Newman has been an enthu-' siastic worker for cricket for' many years, and a staunch sup-' porter of Central Districts in its ■ formative years. He was a slow left-arm bowler of note, repre-i senting Wellington with consider-, able success, and playing for New' Zealand against D. R. Jardine's England team in the 1932-33 sea-! son He has also taken a con-* siderable interest in Hawke Cup! cricket for many years, and has for some time been a member ofi the New Zealand Cricket Council.

Mr Vivian was also a left-hand bowler and a noted left-hand batsman, who toured England with the New Zealand teams in 1931 and 1937. He is regarded as one of the best all-rounders New Zealand cricket has produced. He has an endless enthusiasm for the game, and a great capacity for work. John Reid led the New Zealand team in England this year and has captained New Zealand in home international matches in recent seasons. He is New Zealand's most experienced test cricketer playing at present. The selection committee last season consisted of Messrs Vivian. H. B. Cave (Central Districts), and L. D. Smith (Otago). Cantabrians Cricketers The newly-formed Cantabrians will field a strong team for its first match today, against the Christchurch Boys’ High School senior eleven. The Cantabrians team is: W. McD. Anderson, I. A. Baxter. T. R. Burtt, N. V. Burtt, I. B. Cromb, F. F. Dawson, R. L. Dobson, R. G. Knowles, F. P. O’Erien, R. H. Scott, and W. M. Strachan. Four of these players —Anderson, Cromb, T. B. Burtt, and Scott—have represented New Zealand, and O’Brien at his prime would have been a first choice for a test team of today. He played for Northamptonshire for three seasons. N. V. Burtt and Dawson are former Canterbury players, and Strachan was twelfth man for the province. :1: * U.S. Coif Courses Golf courses in the United States are ‘just wonderful.” according to John Durry, who recently returned to Wellington

from his tour with the New Zealand amateur golf team. He believes the courses in that country encourage good golf. The greens are heavily watered and cut frequently, but are tightly bunkered. Durry considered Cyprus Point and Pebble Beach the best courses on which he played. He had rounds of 73 and 75 respectively for them. « ❖ ❖ Auckland Yachting A Tamaki club yachtsman. D. Robertson, who recently imported a new 505 craft, has taken the lead in the Auckland Frostbite yachting championship. Robertson won the first race in the series and was second in the next. He has established a useful points lead from A. Walker, a former national Frostbite titleholder. The series consists of six points races and is being held bv the Wakatere club at Narrow Neck.

R.S.A. Golf Tourney ! One of the most popular golfj fixtures of the year, the annual tournament of the Christchurch' Returned Servicemen's tion. will be held at the Avondale j course on November 23.
