DIVERSION OF WAIKATO
Site For Earth Dam (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. November 16. Amid the snarl and shriek of giant bulldozers. Ministry of Works men toiled long hours under a hot sun on Saturday successfully to divert the Waikato river at Waipapa. Waipapa, about six miles downstream from Maraetai, is the site for the first major earth dam in the Waikato hydro-electric power network. Using a technique perfected as the result of similar battles with the river in the past, the engineers accomplished the Waipapa diversion without difficulty The Minister of State Electricity (Mr Watt) and the general manager of the department (Mr A. E. Davenport) arrived at Waipapa from Atiamuri. in time to see the closing of the gap in the coffer dam at 5.30 p.m. The upstream coffer dam will be consolidated and raised it will remain when the 100 ft high main earth dam is built—and a downstream coffer dam will be constructed. [ Water between the two coffer 'dams will then be pumped and early next year work wiß I start on the main dam. ■' 1 Waipapa is expected to be iVo- ' ducing electricity in 1961.
