BRITISH WARSHIPS TO VISIT N.Z.
i Aircraft Carrier And Frigate
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. November 12. Two of the latest additions to the Royal Navy’s Far East fleet, the aircraft carrier H.M.S. Albion and the aircraft direction frigate H.M.S. Chichester, will visit New Zealand early next year.
When he announced this today, the Minister of Defence (Mr Connolly) said the Albion and the j Chichester, two of the most modern British warships, had only recently joined the Far East fleet. It was planned that both ships would visit Auckland from i January 23 to 28. The Albion would then visit Wellington, and | Chichester Nelson from January 130 to February 3 after which ' both ships would sail for Australia. Mr Connolly said the Albion was a Centaur-class carrier of about 25.000 tons displacement | with an interim angled flight j deck. The Chichester was a completely new type of specialised frigate. Displacing 1950 tons, she was powered by 14,000 h.p. diesel engines.
It was probable the ships would be accompanied by two fleet auxiliaries, one a tanker and the other a store ship for the Albion’s air squadrons.
