SUCCESS AT SHOW

Woman’s Main Trophy Win

Congratulations did not ruffle the composure of Mrs Jacquelene Van der Velden of “Bellesteyn,” Springston, but she had reason to be pleased. It is not often that a woman exhibitor wins the trophy for the supreme champion of all pure breeds in the pig section at the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s metropolitan show. Kashmir Lady Nancy, the Large White sow owned by Mrs Van der Velden and her husband, yesterday won the New Zealand Pig Breeders’ Association’s silver challenge cup for the best Large White section as well as the Walker and Hall Challenge cup for the supreme champion. The prize-winning sow with her litter of 11 piglets, now three weeks old, is fed and cared for by Mrs Van der Velden.

Nancy had been shampooed in foamy soap flakes and rinsed in blue for the occasion, but as soon as judging was over the big sow went back to sleep in her pen •within earshot of her progeny. The sow was bought by Mr and Mrs Van der Velden when eight weeks old and reared on the Springston farm.

Cambrian Sbciet y.— Members of the Cambrian Society .entertained officers of kindred societies representing the people of Britain on Saturday evening. They included the Christchurch Ulster Association, the president, Mr V. Serris; the London Society of Canterbury, the president, Mr W. Goddard; the Scrttish Society, the chief, Mr A. Gray; the West of England Women’s Association, the president, Mrs Emerson; the Manx Society, Miss Greeba Lewin; the Cornish Gorsedd, the Rev. Kenneth Schollar. Items were given by the following:—Miss Best (Ulster); Misses Lewin (Manx); T’r Schollar (Cornish); and a sword dance by Misses Wendy Cannon and Jeannie Beaton (Scottish). The president of the society, Mr J. G. Parry, also welcomed Mr Davies, Auckland, Welsh Society, and Miss Margaret Jones who has recently returned from a visit to Wales.
