TROTTING SUPER ROYAL IN FAVOUR

Ollivier Handicap At Addington

The Pukekohe mare, Super Royal, may extend her record on the course in the Ollivier Handicap, the main race for pacers and the first leg of the double on the second day of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s cup meeting at Addington. The race has drawn an outstanding field of 12 and it is predicted that it will result in a much more interesting contest than did the New Zealand Cup on Tuesday. It will be run ever 13 furlongs under invitation conditions, which governed the highlysuccessful National Handicap at Addington in August. Super Royal finished a close third in the National Handicap, being run down in the last few yards by Thunder and Invicta. Had she not been left in front soon after straightening up, she may have proved harder to beat.

Super Royal finished gamely for a close eighth in the Canterbury Handicap on Tuesday after being near the rear most of the way. She followed this up with a decisive win in the Final Handicap later in the day. She received a grand trail all the way in that race, and if she can obtain a j similar run in tomorrow’s race she will prove a difficult mare for the back markers to catch over the last furlong. Gentry and Derive will form a strong bracket for their Papatoetoc trainer, P. Stewart. Gentry paced a grand race for third in the New Zealand Cup. He should appreciate the shorter distance in this event. He usually begins well and from 24 yards he should obtain a favourable run throughout. Derive finished strongly for third in a weaker field on the first day of the meeting, and,’ although he will not find his task so easy in this race, he may be prominent. Lookaway looks well enough placed on 30 yards to atone for his failure in the cup on Tuesday. He appears to be right at his peak and with better fortune in the running, he is certain to be hard to beat. False Step, brilliant winner of the cup on Tuesday, meets this field on much more unfavourable terms. He will be set a stiff task from 36 yards, but if the race develops into a true test of stamina, he should run out the last furlong better than most. His stablematc. Thunder, was one of the failures in the cup. but he could do better here. Chance For Caduceus Caduceus paced one of his best races when second in Tuesday’s cup. He has few peers over middle distances, but from 48 yards he will need plenty of luck. However, he is racing better than

ever before and he must be respected.

Invicta has a strong form background, with a win in the Canterbury Handicap on Tuesday to his credit. He, too, is smart over this distance. Lady Belmer and Trueco may show up, but Super Royal. Gentry arjd Lookaway should be the hardest to beat. Robert Dillon is entitled to favouritism in the second leg, the Cashmere Handicap, after his good run for third behind Light Call and Surie Queen in a similar race on Tuesday. Robert Dillon had little in his favour in the running and finished strongly over the last furlong for his placing. The Dillon Hall pacer has been most consistent this season and he is overdue for a win. Red Monarch will be bracketed with Robert Dillon. This will be his first appearance since being trained by M. Holmes. He showed useful form in the north last season and he may race well. Surie Queen seems to pace her best races at Addington. She was the only horse capable of making a race of it with Light Call on Tuesday and she may again be hard to beat. However, Solemnity, fourth in the same race, may be too good for her. Solemnity has raced most consistently in recent weeks and his fourth on Tuesday was an impressive effort. He is certain to be prominent. Guard’s Brigade, from 24 yards, will not be set an easy task, but his third in a much stronger field on Tuesday entitles him to a chance. He is racing most generI ously and deserves a win. I Light Call was a good winner |on Tuesday and if he receives a I favourable run, he may again be | prominent.

Captain Free, Bonny Venture, and Fyvie Queen appeal most of , the remainder.
