MOORINGS FOR YACHTS
Harbour Board’s Discussion
After a request that mooring facilities for yachts and boats al harbour bays should be invcsti- | gated was given favourable consideration, the Lyttelton Harbour Board decided to obtain a report from the engineer-in-chief (Mr J. A. Cashin) and the harbourmaster (Captain A. R. Champion) on the future policy for provision of pleasure boat moorings. The major decision was made in committee on the motion of Mr L. G. Amos, himself a boat owner. He informed the board that many boat owners were being denied mooring facilities and that the board should plan for the future, when space in the inner harbour would be too valuable to be occupied by pleasure craft. The provision of mooring facilities at either Diamond Harbour or Purau for yachts and boats to relieve the existing shortage in the inner harbour will be investigated by the works committee of the board. The decision was made after a request had been received from Mr L. G. Holder, who said he was the owner of a small keeler now moored at Auckland. The harbourmaster had informed him that 26 names were on the waiting list for moorings and. because of the danger, he would not permit unauthorised mooring of boats elsewhere. Some hulls moored in the inner harbour were not used, said Mr Holder, and were occupying valuable space. He was prepared to pay rental for a mooring and to reimburse the board should a rescue launch have to put out to recover his yacht if it broke away. The board decided that the works’ committee should consult suit with Captain Champion.
