Breve’s Second Win At Meeting

Breve was not put to the test to complete a double for the meeting in the Port Cooper High-weight at Riccarton yesterday. The Hawera-trained Balloch gelding was an odds-on favourite and won by three lengths from Hearth Rug, which tried for an all-the-way win. Breve was alongside Hearth Rug in the lead after a furlong and J W. Harris eased him in behind the trailing horses soon after He improved one place from the mile to the home turn, ranged alongside Hearth Rug going to the furlong and soon went ahead. Hearth Rug was unchallenged for second, finishing two lengths and a half clear of Bonny Pippin. There was merit in Bonny Pippin’s third, for he was one of the last away; but even greater merit was Marsana’s fourth a neck behind. Marsana lost five lengths at the start, and had to put in a big run from the five furlongs. Master David was close up fifth, but the others, led home by Summer’s End, were beaten off. Good Record Donna Bella brought her record to three wins, two seconds, and one third from seven starts when she carried top weight of 9-0 to a comfortable win in the Irwell Handicap. Mr P. Louis's Summertime filly was an odds-on favourite and had the race in hand a furlong out. She started from the outside barrier position in a field of nine, ran up to My Fair Lady. Disorder, and Half Volley in the lead after two furlongs, and led into the last furlong from Galina and Buck Jones. Donna Bella won soundly by a length from Galina, which beat Buck Jones just as easily. Disorder was two lengths back, fourth. He had to change ground early but was soon in the leading line. Disorder shaded My Fair Lady. Then there was a gap to Lumnus, which was checked soon after the start. Lumnus just beat Mhor, and Half Volley was next in a gap clear of Spanish Main, which ran greenly. Panda at Good Odds Panda, a consistent campaigner for Mr and Mrs E. Rutherford last season. opened her winning record as a four-year-old In the Apprentices' Handicap. She ended a run of successes by North Island gallopers on the programme. and also halted the succession of victories by the favourites. Panda, a four-year-old Timanova mare in I. McClure’s Riccarton stable, was the 8. 9 favourite, and paid £2B 7s 6d for a win.

The Riccarton apprentice, R. J. Blair, had her in the third line on the home turn, where Bon Salut and Fair King were leading, and Sheonat, Osman, and Bright Amber were trailing. Panda ran strongkly into the lead going to the furlong, shaking off a challenge from Osman, and winning soundly by a length and a half Osman was about three places behind Panda on the home turn, and finished resolutely to shade Fair King for second. Hopeful, always well up, was half a neck back, fourth, and then there was a length to Chief Pal and a length and a half to Rayspar. Santee, Real Response, The Rector, and Mygrid were slow away, and Montreux struck trouble early. Easy Win for Rave Ruve. an unlucky fourth in the Spring Plate on the first day, outclassed the others in the Stonyhurst Handicap, draw’ing away over the last furlong to beat Matlock by two lengths. N. Eastwood had Ruve in the middle of the field until the straight, worked her forward on the outer going to the furlong, where she mastered Matlock and Rustic with ease Matlock, which had been just ahead of the winner at the straight entrance, fought on well for his placing. He beat Rustic, which was alongside Mighty Son behind the pacemaker. Hunted, at the straight, by a length. Brown Watch ran on from the middle of the field for fourth two lengths behind Rustic and just ahead of Tintagel, which had always been handy, but could not quicken from the furlong. Carbonett was a weakening sixth, half a length back. Then came Hunted. Hunting Melody, and Mighty Son, which had their chances. McCool by a Nose After a battling last furlong between the top-weight, McCool, and the favourite, Hauparu Bay, the former gained the deciding stride which gave him victory by a nose in the Ashley Hack Handicap. C. McDonald had McCool in a trailing position behind Brown Treasure and Hauparu Bay was two places further back alongside Packwood and behind Balance, until the straight. McCool ran clear as soon as they straightened for the run home and Hauparu Bay set out after him going to the furlong. These two then drew out, and in a punishing finish McCool just prevailed. Olympic Flame, in the middle of the field until the turn, improved a few places from the furlong for third, but she was three lengths behind Hauparu Bay. Lightning Boy was running on for fourth, a length and a half from Olympic Flame. He just shaded Ration Time, another fast finisher. Packwood was a close sixth, ahead of the weakening Balance, then in a gap came Kaseno. the tail-ender in the early stages of the race, at the head of the others. Kaseno, Ration Time, and Lammas were all slow beginners.
