TEXTILES FOR EXPORT

Target For N.Z. Woollen Mills (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. Nov. 12. The development of a woollen textile industry capable of supplying the needs of New Zealand and a large quantity of goods for export was advocated by the leader of the Social Credit League (Mr W. B. Owen) in an address to 1200 people in the Auckland town hall tonight. For years New Zealanders had been told that theirs was essentially an agricultural country, that the land was the sole source of its wealth, and that primary produce was the only thing that could be exported. Mr Owen said. This was wrong. When the raw materials were produced here there was no reason why New Zealand should not build up an export trade in wool products.

Britain had few raw materials, he said, but had exported her skills. New Zealand could do the same and hold her own with any country in the world.
