BY-ELECTION IN BRITAIN
Labour Retains Pontypool <Rec. 7 pm.) ) LONDON. November 11. The Labour Party (Opposition) retained its Parliamentary scat in a by-election at Pontypool. Monmouthshire. Results of yesterdays polling, announced today, were: Mr Leo Abse, Labour. 20.000 votes; Mr Paul Selwyn Thomas, Conservative. 6273 votes; Mr Benjamin Morgan, Welsh Nationalist. 2927 votes. Labour majority. 13.727 votes. At the 1955 general election, the Labour majority was 16.572 in a straight fight with Conservatives. The state of parties in the 630-member House of Commons now becomes: Conservative and allies. 338; Labour. 280: Liberals. 6; Independents. 3; vacant seats. 3
