GLACIER REACHES McMURDO
Eight Days In Pack Ice
After eight days threading through more than 600 miles of heavy pack ice, the American icebreaker Glacier arrived at McMurdo Sound on Monday. As in previous Antarctic operations the Glacier was the first ship to penetrate the heavy seven to 10 feet thick bay ice blocking the entrance to McMurdo Sound, according to a United States Navy news release. Aided by her television equipped helicopter the Glacier carved a rugged five-mile channel into the sound and prepared a site for the larger cargo ships to unload later this month
After unloading 265.000 gallons of vitally needed fuel and 175 tons of supplies the Glacier will proceed to Little America to deliver cargo and then load selected supplies, equipment, I.G.Y records and specimens, and staff, preparatory to evacuating the base.
