Fred Forman

On a short visit to his home town of Lyttelton last week was Mr Fred (“Cookie”) Forman, now of Gisborne. In the heyday of the Sanders Cup contests in the 1930’s he became prominent as a forward hand in the Canterbury boats.

His spinnaker work in this class has probably not been surpassed and was the subject of wonder and commendation on the part of visiting yachtsmen and his unfailing good humour made him a favourite with all. Fred Forman’s first introduction to the Sanders’ Cup contest was in 1930, when he was included in the crew of the Colleen at Auckland. In 1932 and 1933 he sailed as spinnaker hand to George Brasell in Avenger at Wellington and Lyttelton. He sailed with Elliot Sinclair in Irene at Lyttelton in 1934 and at Stewart Island in 1935 and in Avenger at Auckland in 1936. Fred still interests himself in the contests and was at Wellington to see Auckland take the cup from Canterbury last February.
