Church Income
Sir, —Who ever the church commissioners are, they are not carrying out Christ’s teaching. He said, “Take us thought of the morrow.” Bishop Warren quotes the amounts sent to missions, but that is money subscribed by the people; it does M come out of
the churches’ wealth. That is invested and reinvested until it now amounts to £2ll million. We know that the church has heavy expenses. In 1955 the minimum stipend was £550; in 1957, £690. That is only the salary. In addition the incumbent has a®free house, and he is allowed to keep the Easter offerings up to £5O. Then .there are perquisites up to £l5O for search fees, making the minimum stipend £B5O, and up to £15,000 for the Archbishop of Canterbury. Could Bishop Warren tell us the cost of the Lambeth Conference? —Yours, etc., PUZZLED. October 20, 1958. [The Bishop of Christchurch (the Right Rev. A. K. Warren) commenting on this letter, said: “ * The Press’ has already given generous space for my explanations to ‘Puzzled’ published on October 11, 1958. If there are matters still worrying ‘Puzzled,’ I shall be pleased to meet him or her, if he or she cares to get in touch with me.” Bishop Warren said he had no knowledge of what the Lambeth Conference cost.]
