Traffic Problems
Sir, —The widest road in Christchurch, neglected for many years while called Canal Reserve, now is Linwood avenue. It continues astonishingly to the unbridged Avon in line with a tangle of twisting small streets opposite leading to Stanmore road, at present a main traffic artery at 4.20 and on sports occasions. Is it not rather remarkable that there is no suggestion to alleviate heavy through city traffic by widening some of these lanes among used northern outlets and connecting up with Linwood avenue directly by a boldly designed bridge fitted for weights not contemplated in days of horsepower?—Yours, etc., CONSTRUCTION METHODS. September 4. 1958. [The City Engineer (Mr E. Somers) said the city had more urgent commitments for bridging. A bridge as suggested would not assist in clearing day-by-day traffic from the centre of the city.]
