SUBSCRIPTIONS OF CLUBS

Suggestions For Charges A suggestion that swimming clubs throughout New Zealand should set subscriptions to cover all aspects of administration—around 30s for senior members, 22s 6d for intermediates, and 17s 6d for juniors—was discussed at the annual conference of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association yesterday. The suggestion was contained in a report by the treasurer (Mr A. J. Donaldson) adopted by the conference. “Some centres derive adequate income from the conduct of centre carnivals and impose very little on the finances of individual clubs,’’ said Mr Donaldson. “Other centres, for a host of reasons, do not enjoy this easy income and are consequently a heavy drain on clubs.’’ It was obvious that any attempt to set standard subscriptions to apply throughout the country must fail, said Mr Donaldson. “But centres and clubs, in setting their individual subscriptions, must realise that it is essentially the responsibility of the club members to pay sufficient to cover all administration.’’ The conference decided to recommend to the council that it bring down a standard distance at which backstroke pennants should be placed from the end of a pool. Mr J. Hare (Bay of Plenty) said there was great confusion over the positioning of the pennants, which indicate to a backstroke swimmer when he is approaching the end of the pool. “Even the International Swimming Federation is not decided on this question, and I think we should at least settle it for ourselves.’’ A remit from the Wellington Centre seeking the establishment of a panel of starters was rejected Mr L. A. Trotter (Wellington) said the panel would bring uniformity into starting, and swimmers would not be confused by various styles. Mr W. A. Jenkins (Otago) said the panel would have little effect on starting, since the human element was the important thing. “At some of our championships, it is the swimmers who start the starter,’’ said Mr Jenkins. Election of Officers Officers elected were:— Patron, His Excellency the Gov-ernor-General; president, Mr J. B. F. Cotterill, M.P.; past-presi-dent, Mr J. C. Kirkland; chairman of the council, Mr V.
