Cricket WIN TO NORTH CANTERBURY

R. H. Prouting Takes Nine Wickets North Canterbury secured its third successive win over a Canterbury Eleven when at Hagley Oval yesterday it beat Canterbury by 31 rum on the first innings. The match produced little good batting, but wai notable for the excellent bowlinj of R. H. Prouting, who took nine wickets for 53 runs off 15 overs, and some equally good bowling by the North Canterbury medium-paced bowler, R. Booker, who took six foi 47 after bowling unchanged for 20 4 overs. North Canterbury made 12! and Canterbury 94. The game had not been long ir progress when Prouting found a spo a little short of a good length, anc he got considerable assistance fron it. M. Capstick and J. Cobden wen two of his early victims, but R Capstick with J. Blakly and latei C. Merrin took the score to 99. Then Prouting came on for his second spell, and four more wickets fell for the addition of only six runs. R. Capstick and Merrin scored quite freely when they were together, their partnership ending after they had added 49. Capstick gave an early chance through slips but then settled down to play some fine shots all round the wicket. Merrin. a powerful hitter, also scored well. Canterbury’s Innings The rough patch found by Prouting was also exploited to the full by Merrin, and he also met with early success, dismissing* G. D Alabaster and B. A. Haworth before the fifteenth run came up. Booker, bowling into the high wind and without any apparent rough patch tc help him, nagged away at the batsmen until, in desperation, they hit out. In most cases this proved their undoing, for he kept to a good length with most of his deliveries. J. W. Grocott and D. McKendry carried the score to 39 before Booker disposed of McKendry, and before another run was scored P. Robertshaw took Grocott’s wicket. After G Austin’s wicket fell four runs later I. Anderson halted a procession with some free hitting of the type thal some of the earlier batsmen lacked and he ended the game with the distinction of being top scorer with 19 Only A. Taylor and T. D. Gibsor gave the bowlers any oppositior. after that. Gibson, coming in at number 10. scored quickly with some fluent straight drives. Scores:— NORTH CANTERBURY First Innings M.
