SHIP’S STEERING FAILS
Hurried Stop Made In Auckland Harbour (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, October 27. The 6208-ton British tramp steamer Rushwood had to let go both anchors hurriedly when her steering broke down while she was heading toward the Auckland harbour bridge. The ship, carrying a full load of raw sugar from Australia, was on her way to the Colonial Sugar Refining Company’s wharf at Chelsea. An Auckland Harbour Board pilot, who was in command, immediately ordered the anchors to be let go. “There was no danger to either the ship or your new bridge,’’ said the master (Captain S. King) after the Rushwood had berthed “We were in the correct channel at the time, but when the steering failed it was a normal precaution to put out the anchors. “It turned out to be only minor trouble, and we were able to put it right in a few minutes.”
