A MODERN GODIVA STARTLES TIMARU

History Re-enacted With A Difference (From Out Own Re-porter) TIMARU, October 26. The Country princess in the South Canterbury Centennial Queen Carnival (Miss Nola Tate) held up traffic and attracted thousands of shoppers on Friday evening by re-enacting tin part) the famous ride of Lady Godiva, the beautiful wife of Leofric, Earl of Chester and Lord of Coventry. Miss Tate wore a white bathing costume and a wig which trailed down the flanks of a white hunter, Pharaoh. History recalls that Lady Godiva “pleaded to her lord for the remission of certain impositions from the townspeople, and that he promised to grant her request if she would ride naked through the town.’’

Unlike Lady Godiva, who passed the word to have blinds and shutters drawn at the appointed hour and so obtained the people’s ransom.” Miss Tate advertised her presence through the “Town Crier”—the chairman of the Country Princess committee (Mr D. Gregan)—and the horse was led by Mr Peter Elworthy. The weather was -mild.
