AMERICAN BASE IN CITY
Proposals To Prime Minister
Proposals for long-term rights and occupation of certain facilities in Christchurch to support United States operations in Antarctica will be placed before the Prime Minister (Mr Nash) in Wellington on Friday. The American proposals will be put by the United States Ambassador (Mr F. H. Russell) and the commander of the United States Antarctic expedition (RearAdmiral G. J. Dufek). Admiral Dufek said yesterday that Commander H. Whitney had returned to Christchurch from Washington with certain information, and he could not discuss in detail these arrangements till after he had seen the Prime Minister. “Now that we know we are going to be in the business for quite some time we would like, some permanency in office space and support for our Navy and Air Force Squadrons,” he said. “That will be discussed next Friday morning. We are thinking in terms of 10 years. “I feel sure we can come to some satisfactory arrangements that are mutually acceptable,” he said.
