MAORI SHOW IN AUSTRALIA
“Presentation Unsub tie” (N.Z. Prasa Association— Copt/riffht) (Rec. 9 p.m.) MELBOURNE, October 27. The Maori show deserved the friendly enthusiasm with which it was received on its opening night in Australia, the “Melbourne Herald’s” critic said tonight. “Its basic material is fascinating and so are the players’ skills and potentialities,’’ he said. “But someone should go across the street to Her Majesty’s and sit at the feet of Luisillo, studying stage presentation and, above all, lighting” The Maoris could then build a show which would draw audiences anywhere in the world, he said. “Instead they have an unsubtle. concert-like presentation, with singers narrowing their eyes in the glare of a single spotlight. “The Maori choir, conducted by veteran Henare Toka, sings with warm beauty. The modern trio of funny men at the microphone overstayed their welcome, but the company generally proved how well the Maoris handled jazz and swing music,” he said.
