UNIONS IN BRITAIN
“Trotskyist Plan For Control” LONDON, October 27. A group of Trotskyists were planning to wrest control of British trade unions from the elected leaders and spread “wildcat” strikes throughout industry, the “News Chronicle” reported. The Trotskyists—mostly former Communists still committed to revolutionary activities—would test their growing power over rank-and-file workers by beginning with the building industry, the newspaper said. The move was foreshadowed last night when’ shop stewards from Britain’s largest construction job, the new Shell headquarters building on London’s South Bank, decided to ignore a union order to call off their five-week unofficial strike.
