NELSON-GROWN TOBACCO

Expert Impressed By Standard

("The Press" Special Service) NELSON, September 28. Tobacco grown in the Nelson province compares very favourably with any grown in the Commonwealth in the opinion of Mr F. Ansaldo, leaf director of Rothman’s International Group, who has just made a short visit to the Motueka district. So impressed was his company with the standard of locally grown leaf, said Mr Ansaldo, that it would be willing to use a larger percentage of it in its manufactured products. In reply to a question, he said that if a monetary incentive was needed to encourage growers to produ.ee more leaf, his company was in favour of this being granted, provided other manufacturers thought likewise. Having had extensive experience of the various systems of buying dried leaf, he believed the auction system, with safeguards for the grower, was the best in that it encouraged competitive buying.
