“The comments in ‘The Press’ of September 15 by ‘B.A.S.’ on the selection of the New Zealand team for the third test in Auckland are on the lines of many one-eyed Canterbury writers over the last few years. It is time they dropped their petty provincialism.”—NEW ZEALANDER. • ' “Your article last Saturday was a very timely one, and the matter should be seriously- considered by all South Island unions. In view of the fact that in 1956. after a series of exhaustive trials, a supposed New Zealand fifteen was soundly beaten by a South Island fifteen in Christchurch. Surely a sounder and fairer policy would be separate trials in each island of players selected by the Island selectors, . and a final trial, North versus South, from which teams only the New Zealand selectors would make their final choice. If thought necessary, they could change the backs over at half-time.

“It is a serious reflection by the New Zealand selectors on other players when certain North Islanders, having failed in their picked positions,: get another chance in subsequent tests in others—a shining example in recent years is Zalsh. This year it is Walsh again and Lineen, McMullen and. Brown, also White, proved players in their positions, such as Henderson and Diack and others, get none.”—TIME FOR A CHANGE.
