FOR THE NEW HOME OWNER
A Practical Book On Gardening Your New Home Garden. By Ernest E. Lord, F.R.H.S. Lothian. 152 pp. Index. A new gardening book, whatever its origin, interests the enthusiast always This one is by a noted Australian garden architect: but practically all of it is anplicable to this country. Indeed. Mr Lord pays the compliment of recommending many New Zealand plants. The major emphasis and appeal is the “new” garden. More than many other books, this one is packed with simple common sense on points often missed. “Plan a drive, whether you have a car or not. It can help or lose a sale” “Plan a children’s section under mother’s eye. A long strip of lawn can allow a good run, without using too much space, and include features which will not be harmed in the heat of excitement.” These are samples from two sections. Instead of the usual alphabetical catalogue about different .plants, Mr Lord, grouns his subjects according to situation and then gives an invaluable guide on plants and shrubs for every need, with a brief note on their habit, growth, and appearance. The chapters of breaking in new ground are simple and sound. Because this book is based on Melbourne experience, allowance for climatic differences can be slight. Of digest size, this book can be taken in the pocket on to the job.
