DISQUALIFIED DRIVERS
Dominion Register Advocated
(New Zealand. Press Association) WELLINGTON, September 25. A Dominion-wide register of persons suspended or disqualified from driving and mandatory endorsement of. licences for every speeding offence are advocated by the Commissioner of Transport (Mr H. B. Smith). Mr Smith told the New Zealand Road Safety Council in Wellington today that he had been asked to report on the practicability of such registers for both groups of offenders. He did not favour a register of offenders, for speeding, because it would be too unwieldly. Mr Smith said there were about 3000 suspensions and cancellations of drivers’ licences each year. About 150 convictions were recorded annually for driving while disqualified. He added: “If endorsement of a driver’s licence was automatic for every speeding conviction, then each driver’s licence would be his own record of previous convictions and the register proposed would not be necessary. The endorsements would also make the driver less inclined to take the risk of speeding.”
