YACHTS FOR DOLLARS
N.Z.-Built Boats To Be Exported
(New ’ Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, September 24.
The sale of New Zealand yachts to the United States promises to develop into a profitable dollarearnihg business. Custom-built New Zealand models are finding a ready sale to yachting. enthusiasts in ports on . the West Coast. A casual trade has developed since the end of the Second World War and now an Auckland shipbuilding firm is endeavouring to arrange the trade on a more permanent basis. Once retailing agencies have been established, the firm hopes to send at least two Bear-class yachts a month to be sold in San Francisco. The firm estimates it can land its yachts there at least 2000 dollars cheaper than shipbuilders from the East Coast of the United States.
A spokesman for the firm said freight charges from the east to San Francisco were double those from Auckland to San Francisco “We hope to land .our yachts there for 4000 dollars, plus duty whereas the retail price for the same craft built in the United States is 6000 dollars,” he said “Once our agencies have been established definitely the first order of seven will be followed by two a month.”
