RACING Orari Form For Second Day At Wingatui

Monday’s Geraldine meeting form might prove of greater value than first-day Wingatui form for the main handicap races on the second day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s spring meeting on Saturday. This could be the case especially in the Grandstand Handicap, the first leg of the double. Blue Count is the form horse from the first day of the Dunedin meeting but will be thoroughly tested by Willie Wolseley, Aquarius, and Nasib, three Canterbury horses which went, well in the Geraldine Cup on Monday;

Blue Count was third behind Flair and Purser in the Ranfurly Handicap at Wingatui last Saturday. The winner and runner-up are missing from this field, so Blue Count certainly has strong form claims.

But he has to give Willie Wolseley a stone and it is open to question if he can beat the powerful Waimate horse at the weights.

Willie Wolseley ran the winner Tamarisk to a neck in the Geraldine Cup, one mile and a quarter. The big-striding Alonzo gelding had the luck of the running against him more than once, and he had to be brought wide on the home turn to reach a challenging position. He finished generously for his close second. He had tried gamely to justify his position as win favourite, and with a smoother run he would have come out on top.

Another furlong will show Willie Wolseley to advantage, and the roomier Wingatui track will also be his ally. Aquarius was a solid finisher for third in the Geraldine Cup, and Nasib was fifth, a creditable effort for he did not have a trouble-free run. Showed Stamina

Nasib showed stamina in his three-year-old racing and this distance should not beat him. Willie Wolseley and Aquarius are on the 7-7 minimum and will receive 301 b from the top weight, Ark Royal. This will be Ark Royal’s first race since the Grand National meeting where he was close behind the placed horses in the Winter Cup and the Islington Handicap. He will be bracketed on Saturday with the light-weight Peril, a fair fourth last Saturday. This bracket will be solidly supported. Royal Chant will give Orari form value if he wins the Federal Handicap, the second leg of the double.

He had only five opponents in‘ the Squatters’ Handicap at the Geraldine meeting, but one of them was the doughty Pack Drill, a winner at Riccarton and Ashburton on two of his four earlier starts this season. / Royal Chant

Royal Chant got up to beat Pack Drill by a nose, doing so by sustaining a determined run from the home turn.

Royal Chant has improved with each race—he was fourth last Saturday—this season, and he will take beating over seven furlongs on Saturday. His form this season could reach a very high standard, there was certainly high promise in his racing in the lower grade. The Wingatui stable of H. A. Anderton will have four representatives—The Wanderer, Ben Ledi, Subside, and Treasure Pond. Treasure Pond has done nothing of note as a sprinter, but the others have been good winners for the stable and it will be surprising if at least one of them is not in a contending position at the end. Compensate, a very good winner as a three year-old last season, should be one of the improvers. Last Saturday’s race was his' first for the season. Riccarton representation will be left to Waterfall, a three-year-old filly on the minimum. Doubles Fields Fields for the double are analysed below: — GRANDSTAND HANDICAP, Of £5OO. One mile and three furlongs. 00 ARK ROYAL (6) 9-9.—First start since C.J.C. Islington Handicap, August 9, when he ran on for sixth after a checkered run. Good weight-carrier and strong in stamina. 000 CASSIUS (11) 8-12.—Failed in weaker field last Saturday after having every chance. No appeal unless the ground is soft or heavy. 23 BLUE COUNT (9) 8-7.—Tail-

ender until close to home on first day. Finished third with 8-6 to Flair (9-0) and Purser (9-2). Length: length and a quarter. Close second at previous start, over 11 furlongs at Otago Hunt meeting. Form runner. 001 COINALOT (1) 8-4.—First start at meeting. Easy winner over mile and a quarter at Gore on August 30, but in weaker company than this. 0000 NASIB (8) 8-I.—Good race for fifth after a check in Geraldine Cup on Monday. Form should stiffen when he has easier footing. Was successful as a three-. year-old over this distance. Lightly raced as four-year-old last season. 020 MASTER DAVID (3) 7-11.— Weakening fifth on first day after being one of leaders on home turn. Runner-up to Tamarisk in Ashburton Cup two starts back. Might find victory elusive in this field, but could be a place prospect. 00 LANDON (10) 7-7.—Weakened to eighth after pacemaking last week. Does not appeal. 0003 AQUARIUS (7) 7-7.—Strong finisher for third to Tamarisk and Willie Wolseley in Geraldine Cup, 11 m., on Monday. Beaten a neck and half-length. Will have lightweight’s chance if he runs out 11 furlongs just as strongly. 04 PERIL (5) 7-7.—Fair race but had every chance last week. Will be place prospect If he benefited from that race. Has shown ability at times, but much of his form has been disappointing. 000 POT LUCK (4) 7-7.—Last in 11-

horse field in Ranfurly Handicap last week. No appeal. 442 WILLIE WOLSELEY (2) 7-7. Has started five-year-old career well, and has been racing likean early winner. Ran Tamarisk to a neck in Geraldine Cup after striking trouble during the race. Should show to greater advantage on roomier Wingatui course. FEDERAL HANDICAP, Of £450. Seven furlongs. - THE WANDERER (4) 9-s.—One of Otago’s best sprinters last season: won four races and seldom ran badly. Having his first run since Easter, when he won at Riverton. Should take beating. 2040 BEN LEDI (11) 9-o.—Weak showing in corresponding race last week. Capable sprinter when at best. Twice placed over this distance at Grand National meeting. Q COMPENSATE (3) 8-11.—Will I be one of improvers in this field. Made fresh start on first day. Finished thirteenth after slow start; high-class galloper at best. W SUBSIDE (6) 8-11.—First race since Christchurch Hunt meeting, in July. Won twice earlier this year, once over seven fur-

longs when she carried 8-5 and beat The Wanderer (9-4) by 21 lengths, at Riverton. 0 TREASURE POND (5) 8-6. Second to last in corresponding race last week. May need more ground yet. - BLACK STAR (12) 8-2.—First race as a four-year-old. Twice successful in 19 start? last season, each time as a miler. 041 ROYAL CHANT (8) 7-13. Nosed Pack Drill out at the end of seven furlongs at the Geraldine meeting on Monday. Has improved with each race, and should take beating here. 0003 FAIR SUMMER (9) 7-10.— Faded after disputing lead over seven furlongs at Geraldine meeting on Monday. Royal Chant 1, Pack Drill 2. Nose; 3 lengths. One of earlier failures this season was as a hurdler at Ashburton. - LADY VERONA (10) 7-B.—Lone win last season was as a miler. Will have light-weight’s chance if well placed on the home turn. 0100 IROQUOI (14) 7-7.—Has done nothing of note in two starts in open company. Win three starts back was against hacks at Grand National meeting. Never near front in Telegraph Handicap last week. Finished ninth. 0 JAMELL (7) 7-7.—One of slowest away in Telegraph Handicap, then ran on for eighth. Oldster, but has galloped well this week. 00 ROYAL WAY (I).—Has moderate form background. No appeal. 400 WATERFALL (13) 7-7.—Slight improvement for sixth over six furlongs last Saturday. Fourth was in Rakaia Handicap, won by Braganza, at Ashburton. 0 WINNING WAVE (2) 7-7.—lm-prover’s fifth on first day. Should be better at this distance. Bracketed with Jamell.
