Military Training

Sir,—Mr N. M. Bell continues to protest against our “immoral” war on animals in the interests of “a more peaceful World.” I have tried it Perhaps Mr Bell and some other readers might like to hear how I got on. While I was talking to a neighbour in England he drew my attention to a hen pheasant sitting on a nest at the side of the lane. He asked me what I thought, and I agreed not to interfere or tell -anyone. Horses and dogs owned by gypsies passed within a few feet twice daily until 16 healthy chicks were ready for their life’s career of attacking a market garden close by. Its worried owner sometimes fired a gun to frighten them, sometimes captured them in a trap, but of course the police officer and keeper could find no proof that he killed any. Peaceful world?—Yours, etc., E. A. DENNIS. Hororata, September 21, 1958. Sir,—A writer of a letter was much concerned on the effort being put forward by Mr Holyoake ard his co-members in opposing the Labour Government on its increased taxation measures. I feel quite sure there are many who will agree that the Opposition are trying to do their best to have amended measures which were not promised. One Labour premise was to abolish the compulsory military training scheme. After hearing the final addresses by the Opposition, which were really good, and after hearing Mr Connolly putting the case for abolishing C.M.T., I am of the opinion that the Government, by doing so, is not acting in the best interests of the country. I feel that C.M.T. should continue in view of past happenings, and the opinions of those who should know what is good for the defence of our country. Particularly on this issue a referendum should be taken.—Yours, etc., LILY WHITE. September 21, 1958.
