Blackfish Stranded Near Auckland
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. September 24. Almost 100 blackfish have been stranded in the shallows in the Wade river, near Silverdale. A party from the Marine Department spent today grouping the fish, preparatory to taking them out to sea tomorrow. The blackfish, some of them 20 feet long, stranded themselves in the tidal river below Whangaparoa on Sunday night and Monday morning. The shallows, between the Wade and Okura rivers, stretch about half a mile across. Only a few of the fish were still alive today, said a spokesman for the Marine Department. Because there were too many fish to tow out to sea. they will be loaded on to a barge and taken out beyond Little Barrier Island.
