RENTAL-CAR LICENCE
Appeal Against
Refusal Fails
Described by his counsil as "an assiduous applicant over a number of years” for a licence to operate rental cars, Bryce Duncan Williamson, a Christchurch taxidriver, yesterday ' appealed unsuccessfully before the Transport Licensing Appeal Authority (Judge Archer! in Christchurch against a decision of the No. 9 Transport Licensing Authority (Mr J. A. Bretherton) In June last refusing him a rental car licence, and against the authority’s granting of four additional rental-car licences each to Mutual Rental Cars, Ltd. and Tasman Renta# Cars, Ltd. The appeal Authority said that he accepted the licensing Authority’s finding that Williamson was a suitable person to hold a rentalcar licence—but that did not entitle Williamson to a licence. His premises in Oxford terrace, east of the Star and Garter Hotel, could not be regarded as a suitable city or suburban location to operate a rental-car business, and the appeal must be disallowed. Williamson’s appeal was opposed by both Tasman Rental Cars, Ltd., for whom Mr W. F. Brown appeared, and Mutual Rental Cars, Ltd., for whom Mr A. D. Holland appeared. Mr B. J. Drake and Mr J. S. Haywood appeared for Williamson.
