RACING Braganza Does Sound Trial For Guineas

Braganza beat Ghana, a rival Dunedin Guineas candidate, in the only trial •of special interest at Riccarton yesterday. Braganza, ridden by his race rider, A. J. Stokes, drew away in the last few strides to lead Ghana (E. G. Low) by a length and a half ending a seven-furlong trial on the plough.

They worked away on terms from the seven furlongs and recorded Imin 34 4-ssec for the distance. They had loafed over the first furlong, and recorded Imin 19 3-ssec for the last six, 52 2-ssec for the last four and 40sec for the final three furlongs. The plough had been watered and was not as fast as it was last week.

i Braganza will probably be a short-priced favourite for the Dunedin Guineas.

He has won his only two races as a three-year-old, and his victory over Blonde Sprite. in the John Grigg Stakes at Ashburton advanced him in favour for the Dunedin classic.

Braganza will be taken south today by his Riccarton trainer, J. C. Tomkinson, who trains him for Mr A. N. Smith, president of the Dunedin Jockey Club. Ghana is a slow-maturing Rolled Gold colt owned by Major N. A. Rattray and trained by G. R. Pelling. He raced five times as a two-year-old without success. On his present campaign he has made steady improvement, and won the Lagmhor Stakes at Ashburton on August 30.

Unlike most of the others in the Dunedin Guineas, he has raced over a mile. He was a rather unlucky sixth over that distance in the Methven Hack Handicap, won by River* wood, at Ashburton on September 13., Ghana was going well on the inner in th? straight, but could not find racing room in the last furlong.

Nasib. Garbett, and the two-year-old Disorder will be other newcomers from Riccarton at Wingatui on Saturday. Nasib was fifth in the Geraldine Cup on Monday and did not get the best of the running. Earlier he developed form of a fairly high standard on soft tracks, and will take beating in the Grandstand Handicap on Saturday if the going is easy. Garbett made a successful start as a hurdler at Ashburton on August 30 He was runner-up to his stablemate Champion in the hurdles at Ashburton on September 13.

Garbett is a clean, quick jumper, and it will be surprising if he is not a stake-earner on the trip. Disorder was taken south last week by R. Preece with Foxplay, Hunted, Waterfc.il, and Tripped. His introduction to racing was delayed by a leg infection but he showed good speed in training at Riccarton, and should go well in the Juvenile Handicap. Devilry ' did not please his trainer, M. Ryan, in a gallop on the plough yesterday. Ryan said later that a start for Devilry in the Milburn Hack Handicap at Wingatui on Saturday was unlikely. Sarcelle (W. Beck) sprinted three furlongs on the plough in 40 2-ssec. She is being prepared for a North Island campaign, and> F. A. Roberts will take her north next week.

She will be accompanied by the two-year-old Malona (which ran three furlongs on the No. 6 grass yesterday in 40 4-ssec). Malona, a powerful type and a strong galloper, might take high ranking this season.

The stablemates, Dixie Leigh (J. Beck) and Barney (P. McIlroy) were companions over half a mile, run in 52 l-ssec. They are trained by J. E. Shaw, who returned to Riccarton after the first day of the Dunedin meeting, where Purser and Brianbra represented his stable. Montreux (W. Beck) sprinted half a mile in 50 l-ssec. This four-year-old Oman mare did her early racing in the North Island. She is now trained at Riccarton by A. S. Ellis. Panda (W. Gibbs), which is being prepared for another campaign, recorded 41 3-ssec for three furlongs. Panda has not raced since the Amberley meeting in May when she recorded her first win after a string of minor placings. She is a four-year-old mare by Timanova from Koala, and is trained by I. McClure.
