MAORIS IMPROVE VILLAGE

Preparations For Tourists ••The Press’* Special Service ROTORUA, September 23. Intensive efforts are being made to improve the condition of the Maori village of Whakarewarewa in time for. the coming tourist season. This is an outcome of severe criticism of the village by tourist interests since June. The Maoris themselves have taken the initiative and have already restored several hundred yards of fencing along the scenic walks through the village. The work is being paid for by money raised among the Maori community. The programme includes restoration of a number of decrepit shelter sheds beside the thermal pools. The Rotorua Borough Council has carried out its annual spring cleaning-up of the village and a considerable amount of rubbish has disappeared, from backyards and from mud pools. Another clean-up drive will be made before Christmas.
