FELLOWSHIP FOR POET

Wellington Man To Visit U.S. “The Press’ Special Service WELLINGTON, September 23. The first U.N.E.S.C.O. fellowship of its kind to a New Zealander to travel abroad to meet writers and artists has been awarded to Mr Charles Doyle, of Wellington. Mr Doyle intends to use his fellowship to visit America for six months. He hopes to meet there writers whom he considers of importance in contemporary poetry. He is particularly interested in the group of poets associated with a number of United States universities. Formerly a teacher at Karon School, Wellington, Mr Doyle has had collections of his poems published under the titles “A Splinter of Glass” (1956) and “The Night Shift” (1957). He is co-editor of “Numbers,” a literary magazine, with James K. Baxter and Louis Johnson. He is at present completing his M.A. degree at Victoria University, Wellington.
