SCHOOLS’ COUNCIL STAFF

Fidelity Insurance Required The Christchurch Post-primary Schools’ Council does not like a request from the Auditor-General that it should take out fidelity insurance (against absconding with funds) over its staff, even though this action is required by the standard code of control for secondary schools.

The annual accounts for last year were returned tagged for this reason.

The secretary (Mr P. J. Halligan) reported to the board that when the auditor officer had asked about insurance for himself, he had replied that he could not “get away” with funds because he did not receive cash, make ledger entries, or draw cheques, although he did sign them. He had facetiously suggested that fidelity insurance might more properly apply to the accountant and office assistant. These members of the staff had now been added to the list to be covered. “Let it ride,” said Mrs L. J. Broomfield.

“It is moved that this question be deferred,” said the • chairman (Mr W. J. Cartwright) while members muttered about “a lot of rot” and “we have faith in our staff.”

However, Dr. C. Ellyett said any matter should be deferred for some reason. His suggestion that the council inquire about the cost of the insurance was adopted.
