PARISH HALL AT KAIAPOI

First Stage Of Project

An important event in the history of the Anglican Church in Kaiapoi will be the laying of the foundation stone of the new parish hall of St. Bartholomew’s Church on Sunday by the Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt Rev. A. K. Warren). The building will be in permanent material, and is designed to be linked at a later date with a new church. The parish hall, the first stage of this new building project, will have large glass areas in steel frames. Internally, the walls of the hall are faced with concrete blocks. The ceiling will have acoustic treatment. The new building will have a main hall of 45ft by 33ft, with provision for enlargement by sliding partitions to 60ft by 33ft, plus a stage area 18ft by 33ft. The partitioned portion of the building will be used as a kindergarten and parish room when not in use with the main hall. Three other classrooms are provided on the side of the main hall, and kitchen and cloakrooms are situated at the main entrance. These service rooms will be in fibrous plaster finish, painted in attractive colours. The construction of the new hall will be of reinforced frames with concrete block infill panels, and steel trusses. The floor will be of timber. There will be modern lighting and heating. The architect for the new building project is ”r J. A. Hendry.

The Minister of Education (Mr Skoglund) will officially open the Riccarton High School on the afternoon of Thursday, October 30 Included in the early arrangements are a guard of honour from the school cadets and a Maori welcome song by girls of the school.
