TRANSPORT WORK TENDERS

Local Body Action Disapproved

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 23.

Local authorities which tender for transport work outside their boundaries do not do so with the approval of the Minister of Transport (Mr Mathison). He made this clear in the House of Representatives during the committee stages of the Transport Amendment Act when members discussed the additional Is petrol tax and the colouring of rebate petrol. Mr Mathison said that trucks owned by local authorities were entitled to the rebate, but it was never intended that they should extend their activities outside their own boundaries. In his view, it was anomalous for local authorities to be tendering for outside work and, as a first step to prevent it, he proposed to take the matter up with the New Zealand Counties’ Association. In answer to Mr H. Johnstone (Opposition, Waipa), the Minister said he preferred at this stage not to name the local authorities concerned.
