City’s Record Response To C.O.R.S.O. Clothing Appeal
About 250 wool packs of clothing were collected in Christchurch on Saturday in a record response to the annual C.0.R.5.0 appeal. • By 9 a.m. on Saturday, 61 Army trucks were out collecting, and the amount of clothing given last year was passed when nearly half the trucks had still to return with their loads. Children from 56 primary and intermediate schools collected bundles from households in Christchurch, Lyttelton, Kaiapoi, and. Akaroa. About 5000 children helped altogether. Each truck waited at a strategic point and once loaded, returned to the Addington Show Grounds, where the clothing was off-loaded for sorting and packing.’ which will begin this morning. The whole organisation of collecting from houses, arranged by the Headmasters’ Association, and transportation to the sorting depot had worked most efficiently, Mr G. H. Coley, the organiser of this year’s appeal, said yesterday. With such a huge collection to be made, it was inevitable that a few bundles should oe not picked up from households, said Mr Coley. Householders could send any bundles not collected in to the C.0.R.5.0. depot at 72 Hereford street, or direct to the Addington Show Grounds.
Sorting and packing the clothing would be a gigantic task, said Mr Coley, and he appealed
for voluntary helpers to assist with this work which begins, this morning.
“It would be appreciated if persons could give even just an hour of their time to help,” he said.
For any persons willing to help, a free bus will leave the Square for the Addington Show Grounds at 9.30 a.m. today, and will return at 4 p.m. Morning and afternoon tea will be provided, and tea will be available at lunch-time.
