JAPANESE WILL STUDY ECLIPSE

17 Scientists To Visit Atoll

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) RAROTONGA, Sept. 20. The Japanese vessel Oshoro Maru arrived at Rarotonga this morning with the Japanese solar eclipse expedition, which is on its way to the uninhabited atoll of Suwarrow, 500 miles northwest of Rarotonga. The leaders of the 17-man scientific party which will observe the total solar eclipse on October 12 are Professor Kato, of Tohuku University, and Dr. Suemoto, of the Tokyo Astronomical Observatory. The vessel, which is believed to be the first Japanese vessel ever to call at Rarotonga, will leave for Suwarrow this evening. An American solar eclipse expedition is already established on the island of Pukapuka, 200* miles north-west of Suwarrow. United States Naval personnel have used tons of TN.T. and the most modern mechanical equipment to blast out and clear a passage through the surrounding coral reef.
