Christchurch Club Team
In a curtain-raiser to the representative match, a Christchurch club under 20 team was too good
for the combined Australian clubs, Petersham and Sutherland, and won by 24 points to 11. Christchurch had a big advantage in weight, both back and forward, and it dominated play for much of the game. Christchurch scored after eight minutes when N. Rhynd, centre three-quarters, cut through, and scored. The full-back, D. Barrot. converted. Soon after B. Davies, the ieft-wing scored a try for Christchurch.
The Australians spent some time on attack but the handling in the backs was not good, and they were unable to penetrate Ten minutes before half-time, J Mathews kicked a penalty goal for the Australians, but S. Poi scored two quick tries for Christchurch, one of which Barrot converted. At half-time, Christchurch led by 16 points to 3. In the second half, the Australian backs showed more initiative and several of their movements gained much ground. R. Wil|is, inside centre, scored in the corner for Australia when he made the extra man. Soon after Mathews dived over the scrum for a spectacular try which Walker converted.
Christchurch threw in a series of determined attacks and Poi scored his third try after a blind side movement. Three . minutes later Rhynd beat his opposite and ran 35 yards to score in the corner. He converted his own try.
The referee was Mr K. H. Shirtcliff e.
